Bio Diesel Club
Proposal |
Scott Diamond |
Mr. Diamond provided
council with handout. Mr.
Diamond cites motivation as a problem in his science classes and finds
that many of his students are not interested in learning science.
He proposed an Agriculture Bio Diesel Club to try and get students
interested in learning more about science.
This would be a club that would enable students to learn and have
fun with hands on projects. Mr.
Akers felt that the club was a good idea and would like to see disengaged
kids become involved in something that is not school related.
The SBDM approved the addition of this club to the club list by
consensus. |

Writing Program
Committee Formation |
R. Akers, S. Churchill |
Ms. Churchill
presented the committee with several sample writing pieces that had been
completed by students and turned in for their writing portfolios. Ms.
Churchill advised that the current policy states that one writing piece
per class/per student needs to be completed and turned into the principal
to be filed into student portfolios. The
writing pieces that are being submitted are not adequate to fulfill the
portfolio standards. There is
a need to revise what we are currently doing.
Ms. Churchill continued by stating that maybe we need to reduce the
number of pieces collected during the term.
(But then would we have enough to work on).
Mr. Akers agreed that something needs to be done so that the
writing pieces are usable in the student’s portfolios.
The English IV teacher’s already are responsible for 3 out of the
4 required pieces. It is
extremely important that the student have a workable piece in their
portfolio to use for their fourth required piece.
Mr. Akers feels that it is necessary to set up a committee to form
some standard procedures and time lines.
Ms. Keith agreed that a committee would be helpful to get everyone
on the same page. Mr. Gibson
also agreed. A charge was made to
form a writing committee to review our current policy.
(This is extremely necessary and important since students will have
to have an apprentice score or higher on their portfolios1 to graduate
starting next school year 2008-2009) The charge made is to
gather input from all departments to create a new writing policy and to
decide (1) how to generate multiple pieces, (2) what classes need to be
designated as writing classes, (3) how to grade pieces and how to provide
feedback to students and (4) teacher accountability. |

Discipline Data |
Larry Caudill |
Mr. Caudill was unable
to address the committee, however; provided the council with a handout of
the most recent discipline data. Mr.
Akers reviewed with the SBDM. The
report shows that there is more consistency among teachers in monitoring
the students and reporting discipline issues.
The report showed a small increase in possession of drugs from 2
incidents 1st semester of 2006-07 to 6 in the 1st
semester of the 2007-08. Also,
the number of fights on school property has increased from 7 incidents 1st
semester of 2006-07 to 14 in the 1st semester of 2007-08.
Overall, seniors are responsible for 34.18% of discipline issues recorded,
while juniors are 19.20%, sophomores are 20.89%
and freshman are 25.74% |

Scheduling Committee
Update |
Paula Thacker |
Ms. Thacker provided
handouts collected from each of the department chairs regarding
scheduling. There will be no
changes made to the 2008-09 schedule. The committee would like to
implement a positive change for the 2009-10 school year.
The committee is currently reviewing aspects of a trimester
schedule. The committee is
asked to provide a suggestion by the end of this school year. |
|
8. |
Drug Testing
Information |
R. Akers |
Not discussed at this
time and will be added to a future agenda. |
|
9. |
Budget Update |
R. Akers |
The staffing budget is
due by March 1. Due to the
recent news of the decrease in the state education budget, the department
chairs have been asked to review their departments current staffing and to
also review staffing minus one and minus two staff members.

Incentive Committee
Update |
B. Gibson |
Mr. Gibson presented
an update from the incentive committee.
There will be several changes in incentives this year.
(1) The junior
breakfast after CATS testing will be changed to a sophomore-junior
breakfast before testing. Next
school year there will be a senior breakfast before the on demand writing
test. (2) Incentive cards will
be continued. (3) Teachers
will start to pull marginal students aside to help them set goals for
improvement. If the student meets their goals then the teacher would have
some type of certificate or award. Mr. Gibson is hoping
to talk with the Lion’s Club in hopes of starting an Academic Jacket of
the Month. This program would
recognize two students from each grade/per month for their academic
accomplishments and their photo would appear in the Woodford Sun. The Distinguished
Scholars Banquet will continue. There will no longer
be a CATS assembly, but instead, the committee will purchase some nice
gifts to give away once a week to qualified students. |
