ACADEMIC DECATHLON

 

I.                   Ten Subjects

A.    Math                                             F.  Music

B.     Science                                         G.  Economics

C.     Social Science                            H.  Interview

D.    Art                                                   I.  Essay

E.     Language & Literature             J.  Speech ( prepared & impromptu)

 

II.                A team consists of 9 players using the following GPA criterion:

3 players will have an unweighted GPA of 3.75-4.0

3 players will have an unweighted GPA of 3.0-3.74

3 players will have an unweighted GPA below 3.0

 

III.             The competition involves the following:

A.    Seven multiple-choice exams (Math, Science, Social Science, Art,

Economics, Language/Literature and Music)

50 questions each except for Math which is 35

30 minutes per exam

 

                  B.  Three judged communication events (Essay, Interview & Speech)

                        50 minutes to complete the essay

                        The prepared speech is between 3.5 and 4 minutes

                        The impromptu speech is between 1.5 and 2 minutes

 

C.  Super Quiz (Alternates every other year between Science and Social

      Science) 40 question written exam=60% of the score and the oral relay is

      40% of the score

      The focus for the Super Quiz this year is climatology

 

D. The Art, Music and Social Science focus this year is China

 

 

IV.             Academic Decathlon is the oldest and largest academic competition in the country.

 

V.                Only 7 schools will be competing this year in Kentucky so all teams will advance to the state competition in Louisville

 

VI.             The Academic Decathlon Nationals for 06/07 will be held in Hawaii
