BUSINESS AND OFFICE EDUCATIONCurrently there is a graduation requirement for students to earn 1 credit in Computer Literacy. The courses with + in front of them will count towards fulfilling this computer requirement. The student is encouraged to fit the appropriate course to his/her interests and abilities. ACCOUNTING I Credit: 1 Course Length: Term Grade: 10, 11, 12 The accounting principles taught in this full term course are based on a double entry system (debits and credits). Activities include preparing worksheets, journalizing, posting, preparing payroll records, and financial statements. Electronic calculators are available and some experience will be provided on the use of the computer with accounting data. Keeping records for businesses owned by single partners, proprietors, and corporations will be covered. This course will use the computer when appropriate. +ACCOUNTING II Credit: 1 Grade: 11, 12 Course Length: Term Prerequisite: Accounting I. This full term advanced course of accounting includes an in-depth study of accounting principles, procedures, and techniques used in keeping financial records for sole proprietorship, partnership, and corporate organizations. Skills are developed in supporting schedules, using vouchers and coding, using inventory control and managerial problem-solving situations. The data is processed by a manual and automated system. Included will be a hands-on approach to computerized accounting. With the help of automated accounting software, the student will be able to analyze transactions for computer entry and generate financial statements and other business reports. The knowledge gained in the class will enable the student to transfer their abilities to different types of automated accounting software used in the business field. +ADVANCED COMPUTER SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN Credit: 1 Grade: 11, 12 Course Length: Term Prerequisite: Computer Systems Technician This full term course is a continuation of the Computer Systems Technician course. Students enrolled in this course will work with computer networks and network management, and other content related to A+ certification requirements. This course will cover topics such as software applications, hardware, and network systems diagnostics. This course will provide students with a foundation in computer maintenance, computer applications and fundamentals, and will provide further preparation as a computer technician in network administration and computer repair as related to network applications. *BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS/BUSINESS LAW
BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS Credit: ½ Grade: 10, 11, 12 Course Length: Term This ½ term course (9 weeks) is the study of written and oral communication in a business environment. Emphasis is on writing business letters, preparing and orally presenting business reports, using business information resources, listening and interpreting, electronic mail, and scheduling and organizing business information. In addition to writing, pupils will review the basic principles of spelling, grammar, punctuation, proofreading, vocabulary development and word and number usage. BUSINESS LAW Credit: ½ Grade: 10, 11, 12 Course Length: ½ Term This ½ Term (9 weeks) course develops an understanding of legal rights and responsibilities in personal and business law. Typical units include courts/court procedures, oral/written contracts, consumer protection, and employee/employer relationships. The course will equip a student to recognize legal problems, prevent problems when possible and utilize professional counsel. BUSINESS CAREER MAJOR COOP Credit: 1 or 2 Course Length: 1 or 2 Terms Grade: 12 Prerequisite: Business career major and teacher approval. Anyone completing a career major in Business Education will be able to co-op at a work site directly related to the career major. The work site must be approved by the Co-op teacher prior to placement. The student must have two (2) credits in the career major and be enrolled in the third (3rd) course before taking the co-op lab. BUSINESS

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT Credit: 1/2 Course Length: ½ Term Grade: 10, 11, 12 This ½ Term (9 weeks) course emphasizes owner/manager skills. Areas of study will include types of ownership, community relationships, government regulations, organizational structures, products, services, personnel, finance and informational processing. Management simulations will be utilized. This course will also focus on real life management issues, Internet projects, guest speakers and possible field trips to local businesses. BUSINESS MARKETING Credit: 1/2 Course Length: ½ Term Grade: 10, 11, 12 This ½ Term (9 weeks) course provides the student with a basic foundation in marketing education. Major topics of study will include economics and the free enterprise system, business organization and structure, distribution of goods and services, marketing and retailing occupations, and advertising/sales promotion activities. This course will also focus on sports marketing using the Internet and other resources. +COMPUTER PROGRAMMING Credit: 1 Course Length: Term Grade: 10, 11, 12 This full term course is intended to prepare students for additional academic or vocational training involving computers. The content will include the principles of structured programming and introductory systems analysis. The emphasis will be on learning to write structured, readable, well-documented programs in a popular computer language. +COMPUTER SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN Credit: 1 Course Length: Term Grade: 10, 11, 12 Students enrolled in this full term course will be introduced to basic computer system fundamentals related to PC repair, computer networks and network management, and other content related to A+ certification requirements. This course will cover topics such as software applications, hardware, and basic network systems diagnostics. PROCESSING +DATA PROCESSING Credit: 1/2 Course Length: ½ Term Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 This ½ term (9 weeks) course provides the student with a knowledge of skills in business data processing procedures. The student will learn the a current version of Microsoft Office: Excel for Spreadsheets, Access for Databases, and PowerPoint for Multi-media Presentations. The student will have hands-on practice in all these areas. Students will also get experience in digital cameras, scanners, and other technology tools. +WORD PROCESSING Credit: 1/2 Course length: ½ Term Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 This ½ term (9 weeks) course includes the study of the fundamentals of word processing concepts, terminology, and business document preparation. Activities include formatting, inputting, editing, and printing. Emphasis is placed upon organization of work, keystroke skills, command functions, grammar, spelling, and proofreading for mailable copy. Computerized workstations and business-oriented software are used. +DESKTOP PUBLISHING Credit: 1 Course Length: Term Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 This full-term course will provide the student with the fundamentals of desktop publishing concepts, terminology, and uses. Students will learn how to create publications using word processing, graphics and desktop software. Page layout, design, and paste-up techniques will be studied. Computers will be used for instruction. This course may include several of the following projects: create and design programs for sporting events, plays, and other programs; start-up a business designing T-shirts, mouse pads, mugs, etc.; design menus, business cards, stationary, etc. and other related projects for our school and community. ELECTRONIC OFFICE Credit: 1 Course length: Term Grade 11, 12 Prerequisite: One (1) other Business Education course This full term course is designed to provide students with tasks that replicate a real business office. Projects are used for solving problems, recognizing and establishing priorities, and preparing business documents, using Microsoft Office Professional. The course refines and applies interpersonal and human relation skills. In addition, a mentoring program with several local business and industries provides opportunities for field trips, shadowing experiences, and guest lecturers. Students use skills in language arts, spelling, banking, payroll, communications, and simple business math. FINANCIAL SERVICES I (Banking I) Credit: 1 Course Length: Term Prerequisite: Student must have completed a minimum of two (2) courses in the Business Education program AND an Approved Application. Applications may be picked up in the Business Education Department. This full term course is an intensive study of economical and financial procedures and concepts. It also involves a student financial center that provides application of banking and financial concepts. The banking students develop and manage the financial center through a local sponsoring bank. Bank employees work as consultants with students on site. FINANCIAL

TO BUSINESS/RECORDKEEPING INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS Credit: ½ Course length: ½ Term Grade: 9, 10 This ½ Term (9 weeks) course will provide a basic foundation for further study in business and marketing classes. It will offer experience in all phases of money management and using the services of financial institutions. Automobile insurance, budgets, home insurance, life insurance, social security, and the tax system will be covered. RECORDKEEPING

Grade: 9, 10 Course length: ½ Term This ½ Term (9 weeks) course develops skills in single-entry recordkeeping and provides a basic insight into the organization, operation and control of business through the use of fundamental recordkeeping activities. Recordkeeping skills apply to personal recordkeeping, personal income taxes, purchases, payroll filing, automation, and introduction to the theory of accounting. Not available to a student who has completed accounting or is currently taking accounting. +KEYBOARDING
APPLICATIONS/COMPUTER APPLICATIONS +KEYBOARDING APPLICATIONS Credit: ½ Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Course length: ½ Term In this ½ Term (9 weeks) course, the student will become familiar with the use of the computer as a tool for both work-personal applications and computer related careers. Course content will include: Alphabetical Keyboarding Technique, Numeric Keyboarding, Formatting Reports and Tables, Document Processing of Memos, Letters and Reports, Timed Writings for speed and accuracy. This course uses a current version of MS Works. This course is for the “true beginners.” Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: ½ Course length: ½ Term In this ½ Term (9 weeks) course, the student will become familiar with the computer as a tool for both work-personal applications and computer related careers. Course content will include: Intro. to Computers, operating systems, networks, spreadsheets, database management, charts and graphs and Intro. to Internet. Grade: 12 Course length: Term Prerequisite: Information sheet to be picked up in Main Office. Students in this full term course will be involved in learning through the school offices. The student will be providing a service to the school in terms of time and energy donated to the school environment. Students will be expected to learn the systems in which they are involved (Main Office, Guidance Office, Library, computer lab, etc.), learn the technological requirements of the system, learn the social skills requirements of the system and apply the learnings in the service learning environment.
