Assign p. 274 31-10, 29-46, and 57-66. 3/14/08 More with complex numbers but also introduce completing the square so that students can write a quadratic in vertex form without finding the vertex and so that they can solve quadratic equations that do not factor. Assign a worksheet over complex numbers (5.9 old Alg. II workbook odds only) and p. 281 #1-31 1st column only. 3/17/08 More completing the square to solve quadratic equations. Also explain how this method will differ just a little if asked to rewrite a quadratic into vertex form. Introduce the quadratic formula and do examples showing how to solve quadratics using the QF. Assign p. 381 #3-33 multiples of 3, 34, 36, 42-48 multiples of 3; p. 289 #4, 7, and 13. 3/18/08 Went over homework. Continued working on completing the square and quadratic formula. Gave explanation on the discriminant and how to determine the type of roots a quadratic equation will have. Assigned midterm review packet and seven board problems over completing the square, quadratic formula, and factoring. 3/20/08 Reviewed completing the square, quadratic formula, and factoring by going over board problems assigned yesterday. Quiz over 5.5-5.8. With time remaining, review for midterm. No written assignment tonight so that students can study for midterm. 3/21/08 Chapter 5 review packet assigned in preparation for the unit 5 exam next Tuesday. 3/24/08 Went over quiz from last Thursday and passed back midterm exams from Friday. Went over homework and assigned p. 318 #2-32 even, 48, and 50 as well as remainder of exponent problems on p. 362. 4/09/08 Worksheet reviewing exponent laws (particularly problems containing negative exponents) and problems dealing with division of polynomials using both long division and synthetic division. Do all problems on both sides of worksheet. 4/10/08 Reviewed all sections 6.1-6.4, which includes all operations of polynomials (add, sub't, mult., and div.), factoring to solve quadratic, cubic, and even quartic equations for all roots of the equation, and finding polynomials in standard form if given the roots of an equation. Scattered problems assigned from worksheets taken out of the chapter 6 workbook. 4/11/08 Quiz over sections 6.1-6.4, with more emphasis on exponent laws and division of polynomials. No homework. 4/14/08 Began chapter 11, working with arithmetic sequences and series. Gave instruction on the difference between a sequence and a series, and did examples on how to determine the nth term of a sequence and how to find the sum of a finite arithmetic series. Assigned p. 596 #1-41 odd, 47-51 odd, and 63-67 odd as well as p. 610 #1-31 odd. 4/15/08 Went over homework problems. Continued working with arithmetic sequences and series, but also introduced the difference between an arithmetic versus a geometric sequence. Assigned p. 596 #2-42 even and 64-70 even as well as p. 610 #2-30 even. 4/16/08 Instruction on geometric sequences and both finite and infinite geometric series. Examples showing how formulas can be used to determine the nth term of a sequence of the sum of a geometric series, but also showed examples of finding these items without using a formual as such. Assigned p. 602 #1-27 odd, 28-36 all, 37, 39, and 48-50 as well as p. 616 #1-7 odd, 9-17 all, 19-29 odd, and #33-37 odd. 4/17/08 Worksheets 11.2-11.5 reviewing the week's work over sequences and series (both arithmetic and geometric). Not all problems assigned on worksheet--just specified problems. Chapter 11 test on Friday or Monday depending on student preparation. 4/18/08 Gave chapter 11 test over sequences and series. Assigned p. 366 #1-36 all and 39-54 all over simplifying basic radical expressions, introduced last Friday before deciding to do sequences/series this week. 4/21/08 Multiplication and division of radical expressions, section 7.2. Assigned p. 371 #1-34 all. 4/22/08 Worksheet given for more practice simplifying radical expressions, radical products, and quotients of radicals. 4/23/08 Continue working with radical expressions but went on to include binomial expressions using multiplication and division. Assigned p. 372 #39, 40, and 45-48 as well as p. 376 #1-18 all and 2042 even. 4/24/08 Went over homework from p. 372 and p. 376. Introduced rational exponents (particularly with numerical base). Assigned review packet over sections 7.1-7.3, with a review worksheet over exponent laws attached as well, assigning specific problems from the packet. Quiz Friday. 4/25/08 Quiz over sections 7.1-7.3 and over exponent laws (mostly integer exponents with a few rational exponents). Did a few more examples involving rational exponents and the relationship between rational exponents and radical expressions and introduced solving radical equations. Assigned p. 382 #1-17 and 30-37 as well as p. 388 #1-19 odd. 4/28/08 Went over homework covering rational exponents and solving of radical equations. Continue working on solving radical equations, but also go on to teach function operations and composition of functions. Assign p. 388 #2-28 even (omit 14) and 48, as well as p. 394 #12-18, 22-30, and 63-67 odd. 4/29/08 Went over homework from p. 394. Moved on to give instruction on how to find the inverse of a given function, how graphs of inverses relate to each other, and how the composition of a function and its inverse function always equal x. Assigned a worksheet over function operations and composition, #13-55 odds and p. 404 #1-17 odds and 23-29 odds. 4/30/08 Went over homework on finding inverses of linear, parabolic, and square root functions. Gave instruction on using translations of parent functions taught in conjunction with previous functions so that students can begin to graph radical functions (particularly square root functions). Assigned p. 404 #2-28 even, 32, and 34 as well as p. 411 #1-7 odd, 9, 15, and 17-21 odd. 5/01/08 Went over homework (particularly those problems where students had to graph radical equations) and then reviewed all of chapter 7 in preparation for Chapter 7 test tomorrow. Assigned a review packet covering mostly 7.5-7.8 with specific problems from each page. 5/02/08 Chapter 7 Test given. No homework assigned. 5/05/08 Gave instruction on direct, inverse, and joint variation and did examples involving each. Assigned p. 74 #1-28 all and p. 481 #5-15, 18, 20, 22, and 24-27 all. 5/06/08 Went over homework. Gave instruction on graphing the basic function y=1/x and translations of this function, including the naming of vertical and horizontal asymptotes, as well as determining any discontinuities (hole or asymptote) for a given rational function. Assigned worksheet over variation and the new material presented today. On 9-1 worksheet, assigned #1, 3, 7, 9, 15, 17, 19, 23, 25-33 odd; on 9-2, assigned 1-11 odd, and on 9-3, #1-9 odd. 5/07/08 Went over homework from Tuesday. Further explanation and instruction given over finding discontinuities (vertical asymptotes/holes in graph) of rational functions. Also did examples of simplifying rational expressions and multiplying/dividing rational expressions by factoring. Assigned evens from worksheet given on Tuesday for 9.2 and 9.3 as well as p. 501 #1-19 odd and 27-31 odd. 5/08/08 Went over homework. After short review, gave classwork assignment over variation, graphs and discontinuities of rational functions, and simplifying/multiplying/dividing rational expressions. After turning in the classwork assignment, I did a couple of examples of adding and subtracting rational expressions. Assigned p. 501 #2-20 even, 28-32 even, and p. 507 #11-23 odd. 5/09/08 Went over homework assigned Thursday. Continue working on addition/subtraction of rational expressions, but also introduce section 9.6 (solving rational equations). Assign p. 507 evens #12-40, 44, and 48 as well as p. 514 #3, 5, 11, 13, 19, 21, and 43. Test over chapter 9 will be next Tuesday or Wednesday. 5/12/08 Went over homework assigned Friday. Assign a worksheet reviewing sections 9.4-9.5 (Operations and equations using rational expressions). Test over chapter 9 will now be on Wednesday. 5/13/08 Went over problems from worksheet assigned yesterday. Reviewed all of chapter 9, including variation, discontinuities and asymptotes of rational functions, and operations of rational expressions. Assigned a review sheet in preparation for test. 5/14/08 Chapter 9 test. Introduced matrices (dimension, adding, subtracting) in the last 15 minutes of class, and assigned p. 166 #1-18, 20-25 and p. 174 #1-13, 16-22, 24, and 25. 5/15/08 Majority of students out with AP World History test, but to those present, I did a couple of examples illustrating multiplication of matrices, then assigned a worksheet over addition, subtraction, and multiplication of matrices, sections 4.2 practice and 4.3 study guide from the Glencoe Alg. Ii workbook. 5/16/08 Went over homework from Wednesday and Thursday. Did examples for those absent Thursday on multiplication of matrices. Also went on to give instruction on basic probability and probabilities of multiple events, section 1.6 and 9.7. Assigned worksheet on matrices that includes problems from 4.1-4.3 as follows; 4.1--#2, 4, 6, 7-10; 4.2--#3, 6, 8, 12, and 13; 4.3--#3, 6-8, 21, and 30. May also assign p. 42 #1, 2, 6-14, 17-20, 24-38, 46, and 49 as well as p. 522 #1-44 all and 53-58. This may be put off until Monday. 5/19/08 Class did not meet due to spring fling. 5/20/08 No school--Election Day. 5/21/08 Went over homework assigned last Friday--matrix review, and then probability from the textbook. Instruction on permutations and combinations, and the assignment was a worksheet over probability and a worksheet over permutations/combinations. Quiz over matrices tomorrow as well. 5/22/08 Quiz over 4.1-4.3. Continue working with permutations/combinations. Assign another worksheet over both probability and one over permutations/combinations. 5/23/08 Give instruction on how to obtain a Box/Whisker plot on the calculator so as to determine the quartiles of a set of data, and also using the calculator to find one-variable statistical measures such as standard deviation, mean, median, and mode. Finally discuss normal bell shaped curve as well as standard normal curve. Assign worksheets 12-1-12-3 specified problems and give a take home quiz over probability, permutations, combinations, and statistics.
