Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Agriscience introduces a scientific approach to the agriculture industry. Students will each complete an agriscience fair project. Instruction will include cells and basic genetics, food science, Kentucky agriculture, organic agriculture, and other current agricultural issues and trends. Agricultural career opportunities will be emphasized in this class. Laboratory experiences relating to basic and current technology will be part of the program. Leadership development will be provided through FFA. Animal Science:Grade: 10, 11, 12 Animal science develops basic knowledge and skills pertaining to livestock identification, selection, health management, and marketing of one or more species of farm animals. The latest biotechnological applications will be included. The content may be enhanced with appropriate computer applications. Leadership development will be provided through FFA. Each student will be expected to have a supervised agricultural experience project. Animal Technology:Grade: 10, 11, 12 This course provides basic instruction in the selection and evaluation of production animals, as well as nutrition, digestion, and reproduction/genetics. Emphasis is placed on current biotechnological applications for one or more species. The course content is enhanced by appropriate computer applications. Leadership development will be provided through FFA. Each student will be expected to have a supervised agricultural experience project. Equine Science:Grade: 10, 11, 12 Equine science, or horse science, develops knowledge and skills pertaining to breed identification and selection, anatomy, physiology, grooming, health, disease, parasite control, and sanitation practice of horses. Leadership development will be provided through FFA. Each student will be expected to have an agricultural experience program. Farm and Agribusiness Management:Grade: 11, 12 Students will develop basic skills in managing agricultural business and farms. The content of this course will include decision-making, management, production, equipment, credit and taxes, market analysis, and development of a farm plan, as well as, basic economic principles. Leadership development will be provided through FFA. Each student will be expected to have an agricultural experience program. Floral Design:Grade: 10, 11, 12 This course uses “hands on” experiences to teach floral design techniques using both fresh and dried flowers in a variety of arrangements. Content will include basic types of floral arrangements, as well as identification, production, and maintenance practices of plants used in interior landscapes. “Hands on” activities in floral arrangements will make up a large portion of this course. The content of the course may be enhanced by appropriate computer applications. Leadership development will be provided through FFA. Each student will be expected to develop a supervised agricultural experience program and pay a $20.00 lab fee. Greenhouse Technology:Grade: 11, 12 Plant and Land Science:Grade: 10, 11, 12 Plant and Land Science develops basic scientific knowledge and skills pertaining to management of the land and its effects on food and fiber production, the environment, and the quality of life. The relationship of land to plant growth will be emphasized, along with soil science and conservation techniques. Plant composition, reproduction, growth, and current biotechnological advances will be included. Content may be enhanced with appropriate computer applications. Leadership development will be provided through FFA. Each student will be expected to have an agricultural experience program. Principles of Agriculture Science and Technology:Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course introduces students to the various segments of the agricultural industry. Leadership skills will be emphasized, such as public speaking and personal record keeping. Instruction in earning the Greenhand FFA Degree will be included as a major part of this course. Students will receive personal guidance in selecting, planning, implementing and maintaining records of a supervised agricultural experience program. Leadership development will be provided through FFA. |
