Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course is designed for students who express an interest in Health professions. This class is an orientation and foundation for occupations and functions across the health career cluster. The student will learn about the health care industry, health care economics, and work place skills. Leadership development, employability skills and medical terminology will be implemented throughout the course. Medicaid Nurse Aide (MNA):Grade: 12 The nurse aid training and competency evaluation program is designed to provide both classroom instruction and clinical practice that will assist the student in gaining knowledge and skills essential to the provisions of nurse aide services. Students will also earn certifications in first aid and CPR. This course is for seniors who have a sincere interest in becoming a Medicaid Nurse Aide or who will use this certification as a stepping stone to different health care occupations. Students will participate in an intense study of medical terminology. The language includes terms used by all health care workers in all career major areas. Emphasis is on correct pronunciation, spelling, and application. Medical terminology includes reading and writing exercises, research and connection to medical science. Students will need to purchase the MNA workbook ($25.00), scrubs, and the SRNA certification testing fee (approximately $50.00). Students have the option to earn 3 hours of college credit through BCTC dual enrollment program. Students are required to have a TB skin test before attending clinicals. Students will ride the bus to and from clinical. Medical Sciences:Grade: 10, 11, 12 This program is oriented toward students with the desire to pursue a career in allied health care. The student will job shadow in various local health care environments. An additional focus on anatomy and physiology will be required. Students are required to purchase scrubs to wear during job shadowing. The style and color will be announced at the beginning of the term. Students will ride a bus to and from clinicals. Students are required to have a TB skin test before attending clinicals. Principles of Health Science:Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course will cover broad health care core standards which specify the knowledge and skills that the vast majority of health care workers should have. Students will be exposed to multiple topics, disease processes, theory, and applications concerning health care, patients, and co-workers. Safety and emergency procedures will be emphasized as students will earn certification in CPR and first aid. This course will also focus on current emergency techniques relative to cardiac and/or respiratory arrest and emergency situations. It is designed to promote an understanding of Universal Precautions necessary for personal and professional health maintenance and infection control. Upon completion of this course, the student is eligible to become certified in safety, first aid, and CPR as required by the American Heart Association. |
