Drawing:

Prerequisite: Introduction to Art I and II

This course is designed to introduce students to an in-depth study of drawing techniques, compositional skills, individual styles and materials. Students will engage in a critical analysis of the work of famous artists, their own work and that of peers. Students will develop solutions to problems posed by the instructor. In this class, students will develop drawing skills in portraiture, the human form, landscapes, design work and still life objects. There will be regular exhibits of student work and art competitions are encouraged.

Honors Art:

This course is designed for the student to further explore the visual arts. Together, the student and the instructor will plan a course of study focusing on the student’s individual interests to build a portfolio. The student will be encouraged to explore different mediums for an area of concentration. The class will be required to regularly complete sketchbook assignments and produce 12 finished pieces of artwork. Students will research other artists and their styles and will engage in a critical analysis of the work of famous artists, their own work and that of peers. A summer work list will be provided. The students must be organized and prepared for work outside of the classroom.

This course is the foundation for the visual art program. It is designed to provide experiences that challenge interested students. An introduction to the elements and principles of design and how to apply them is a major part of this course. A variety of media will be used. A study of art history is an integral part of the “hands on” experience in the studio setting. Students will engage in critical analysis of their own and that of famous artists. There will be regular exhibitions of student work.

Introduction to Art II:

This course will build on the foundation created by Introduction to Art I. Students will broaden and deepen their technical, interpretative and analytical skills through a series of culturally themed projects. There will be regular exhibitions of student work.

Painting:

Prerequisite: Introduction to Art I and II

This course is designed to introduce students to an in-depth study of traditional painting techniques with watercolor and acrylic paint. Technical, decorative, communicative and expressive matures of painting will be covered. Functions of known works, schools and styles will be studied, with an emphasis on experimentation with media and technique. Students will engage in critical analysis of famous artists, themselves and others. There will be regular exhibits of student work and art competitions. 

Studio Art AP:

Prerequisites: Introduction to Art I and II; one or more additional art classes; teacher approval

This course is designed to build a strong portfolio in preparation for College Board Advanced Placement (AP) standards and college credit and is recommended only for the very serious art student. A small portfolio of 10 to 16 pieces from three different mediums with no more than 50% from slide form would be necessary for consideration for this course. The course will require 30 to 35 pieces to be completed in the allotted time. A pre-class “to do” list will be provided during the prior semester. This course can be repeated up to three times (one for each portfolio) for credit. An AP portfolio submission is required to the final grade in the course.
