Welcome
to the English IV website.
Within
you will find a number of helpful tools for getting through the
semester.
The Syllabus
This is
your first introduction to the course. Within it you will find
an overview of the literature, the kinds of writing we'll do,
materials required, classroom expectations, and the grading policy.
The Writing
Portfolio
Seniors
will complete Kentucky's Writing Portfolio as part of the KATS
assessment. This link will direct you to the Kentucky Department
of Education's description of the portfolio's contents, the categories
including: Reflective, Personal, Literary, and Transactive Writing.
I have also included a description of the purpose and desired
outcomes of this portfolio.
British
Literature
This term
you'll be introduced to a variety of classic British poetry and
prose as well as other world literature. First, we'll tackle the
wonderful Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, and then move on somewhat
chronologically through a sampling of other great literature. This
link will lead you to some background information on the works
and to other links that will help you with both comprehension
and appreciation of the works.
Grammar
and Style
The Writing
Portfolio obviously doesn't write itself. To write well, you must
have a handle on grammar and style. We will not, however, learn
grammar in isolation but will instead use it as a tool to improve
your writing. Some particular areas of concentration will include:
thesis statements, active versus passive voice, parallel structure,
varied sentence structure, punctuation, phrases and clauses.
Calendar
The calendar
provides a monthly overview of what we'll be covering and when.
I recommend you consult it frequently to find out about upcoming
assignments, projects, and deadlines.
Note: Keep an eye out for
the mystery link.
