**APPAREL MANAGEMENT/HOUSING ENVIRONMENTS

 

APPAREL MANAGEMENT

This course emphasizes the responsibility of individuals in coordinating, selecting, and caring for apparel. Practical problems to be addressed relate to apparel choices, wardrobe planning, budgeting and purchasing, and alterations and repair.  Careers in fashion merchandising, textiles, and apparel are investigated.

This course enables students to study the practical problems related to acquiring housing, conserving energy, maintaining a home, equipping and furnishing a home, designing/redesigning areas in a home and exploring careers in housing.

This course is designed to help students realize the level of commitment required to manage a career and family.  It will assist students in developing the skills needed to resolve family and work issues.  The impact of a career will be explored as to how it affects family goals, financial goals, and personal values.

 

CHILD/HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

This course addresses the practical problems related to understanding the types and stages

of human growth and development, recognizing effects of heredity and environment on human growth and development, meeting the needs of exceptional children, promoting optimum growth and development in the infancy, toddler, preschool, middle childhood, adolescent, and adulthood stages.  Careers in child/human development are explored.  Leadership development will be provided through the FCCLA Club.

 

CHILD DEVELOPMENT I

Prerequisite:    Prior or concurrent enrollment in Child/Human Development.

                                                                  

Child Development I is an entry class for students interested in pursuing a career in early childhood education, nursery school, day care centers, or social work.  A simulated child care center (Busy Bee Playschool) will provide training, skills, and experience for understanding the growth and development of preschoolers.  The childcare class is designed to meet the requirements for Tech Prep.

 

CHILD DEVELOPMENT II

Grade:  11, 12                                                                                   Course Length: 2 Terms

 

Prerequisite:      Child   Development   I.

 

This class is an advanced child care experience.  The students will study child care and development, do bulletin boards, work on thematic units and take field trips for one block the first term.  During the second term, the student will go out to various day cares, preschools, and elementary schools throughout the community for hands-on experience with children and shadowing of employers for two blocks.  This is a Tech Prep program.

 

CHILD CARE CAREER COOP

Credit:  1 or 2

Grade: 12                                                                                 Course Length: 1 or 2 Terms

 

Prerequisite:             Child Care Career Major and teacher appproval. 

 

This class allows students who have successfully completed Child Development I and II to gain additional work experience with children.  The students may be paid for this work experience.  This course will be scheduled according to individual student needs.

 

FOODS/CULINARY SKILLS

This course includes the study of planning and preparing various foods.  Some of the techniques covered include: making breads, cake baking and decorating, and microwave cooking.  The hospitality industry is a growing area of food service.  Students will be introduced to planning and preparing of receptions, catered events, and other occasions. Practical problems addressed will relate to attitudes toward food, nutrition facts, special health concerns, diets, and management of food resources.  Foods is a core elective for  Tech Prep.

 


HOSPITALITY SERVICES COOP

Prerequisite:  Hospitality Services Career Major and teacher approval.

 

This class is a work-based learning experience in the hospitality industry. 

 

PARENTING

Parenting is designed to aid students in developing effective parenting and care giving skills and develop a better understanding of individuals within the family.  This course provides an introduction to parenting and child development issues, such as parental care, growth and development, and child care careers.  Field trips, guest speakers, and the use of community resources reinforce classroom studies.  Students interested in careers in education, psychology, sociology and care giving will benefit from this course.

Nutritional Science is a course that has a variety of applications to everyday life and many careers.  Much of the study and work in this course is directed toward providing students with knowledge of nutritional concepts and the various relationships between nutrition and science.  Scientific methods are used to conduct laboratory experiments with food. Students explore career possibilities in medical science, nutrition, microbiology, family and consumer sciences, dietetics, and various research specialties.

 

LIFE SKILLS

This course introduces the student to basic skills needed to live in today’s world.  Emphasis is on work and family, adolescent development, selection and care of clothing, consumer spending, housing choices, challenges of raising children, and guidance in establishing relationships.


 

INTRODUCTION TO FOOD SERVICE AND HOSPITALITY

An introduction to basic foods and hospitality with an emphasis in food preparation, nutrition, and food careers.  This class will include labs designed for the student interested in food service and hospitality.

 

SPECIALIZED SERVICE IN HOSPITALITY

This course is designed to provide training in the hospitality field.  Job and career opportunities will be explored.  Instruction will include skills development and food labs.  Shadowing and work experiences in a variety of commercial establishments such as restaurants, catering, hotels, and motels will be included.
