Credit: 1 Grade: 10, 11 Course Length: Term The Arts and Humanities course builds upon knowledge and skills acquired in middle levels arts programs to provide students with a grounding in the arts that enables them to appreciate their cultural and historical heritage. The content in history and appreciation of visual and performing arts includes the discipline of dance, music, theatre, art, and literature combined with the humanities. A variety of media, print sources, and participatory activities are blended to provide a connection among periods, styles, and cultures. Students become aware that time, place, and society influence the arts and humanities and that different people share common experiences and attitudes. The main focus is to enable students to respond to all art forms through describing, analyzing, interpreting, evaluating, and considering the arts as significant human achievements. Marching Band and
Concert Band or Chorus and Concert Choir with embedded arts and humanities
successfully completed during a single school year will satisfy the Arts and
Humanities graduation requirement. This
is recommended during the sophomore year. ADVANCED MUSIC Credit: l Grade: 11,

Music and/or the ability to play an instrument and read music. The purpose of this class is to help prepare
college-bound students for a major or minor degree in music.
Emphasis will be placed on musical composition and history.
It will give students the basis for intelligent appraisal of individual
styles of music from the past and present. BAND Credit: 1

ADVANCED
AND REGULAR BAND INFORMATION: The Woodford County High School Band offers
many ensemble experiences including the marching
concert bands. As a musical
representation of Woodford County High School, each performing organization will
maintain a high degree of excellence. The
band has an average enrollment of 150 students. Band is co-curricular class.
Grades will be given not only for class work but also for major
performances and after school rehearsals. Major
performances are those involving the entire band.
Examples are football games, parades, concerts, and KMEA festivals.
After school rehearsals are usually held on each Tuesday and Thursday
immediately after school hours. Students
present in school on the day of a performance or rehearsal are expected to be in
attendance for that function. Band
members must maintain a 2.0 GPA and passing 3 out of the 4 classes to be
eligible for participation in nay band performance. Band is a two-term all year class. The required humanities credit will be incorporated into the
class. Students must be enrolled in
the first-term to be eligible to enroll in the second-term.
Students may drop band for the second-term.
If a student chooses to return and participate in the all year band
program, who remain eligible academically, and in good point standing will be
permitted to participate in the spring trip, solo, and ensemble and all state
band. The band has incorporated a merit/demerit
system. This system determines
which students letter in band and are eligible to travel on the annual spring
trip. Points are earned from
performance and rehearsals along with other activities assigned by the director.
Demerits may also be earned by breaking band expectations.
These expectations are given to each student at the end of the 8th
grade year or at band camp and must be signed by the students and
parent/guardian. Attendance for summer bank camp is mandatory.
The camp is two weeks and the dates are set one year in advance.
Incoming freshmen, any students moving from another high school or 8th
grade middle school band program, percussion and flag corps members must attend
both weeks. A one-time fee per family of $50.00 is assessed as
uniform rental. Each student must
purchase his/her band shoes from the shoe company representative chosen by the
director. These are usually ordered
during summer band camp. The
student also must purchase a summer uniform.
This uniform consists of a solid white golf style shirt, mid thigh black
shorts, white athletic shoes and white socks. +CHORUS Credit: l Grade: 9,

Course Length: Term The purposes of this class are to provide
students an opportunity to increase their knowledge and appreciation of music,
to develop the voice, and to develop the ability to perform in public with
confidence. Emphasis will be placed
on a wide variety of choral styles and music ranging from contemporary/pop/show
to fine choral literature. Students
are encouraged to participate in solo competitions and are required to
perform in concerts and competitions. Some
out-of-school performances may be required. +CONCERT CHOIR Credit: l Grade: 9,
10, 11, 12
Course Length: Term The
purposes of this class it to provide students an opportunity to increase their
knowledge and appreciation of music, to develop the voice, and to develop the
ability to perform in public with confidence.
Emphasis will be placed on a wide variety of choral styles and music
ranging from contemporary/pop/show to fine choral literature.
Students are encouraged to participate in solo competitions and are required
to perform in concerts and competition. Some
out-of-school performances are required. +Successful
completion of Chorus and Concert Choir during a single school year satisfies the
Arts and Humanities graduation requirement. This is recommended for the sophomore year. GENERAL MUSIC Credit: l Grade: 9,
10, 11, 12
Course Length: Term The purpose of this class is to provide the students
an opportunity to increase their knowledge and appreciation of music.
Topics include student of music in the American culture and other
cultures, dance and rhythm, performance, emotion and order in music, love songs,
religious music, musical theater, jazz, popular and classical music.
This is a fun, interesting, and educational class for anyone. GUITAR Credit: l Grade: 9,
10, 11, 12
Course Length: Term Students in this class will learn basic music skills
as applied to the guitar. Focus on
contemporary music history and world music.
Students must provide their own guitar.
This class will perform as an ensemble twice during the semester.
Music is selected from a variety of musicians including CCR, Pink Floyd,
Beatles, Skynard, etc. SELECT CHOIR Credit: l Grade: 10,
11, 12
Course Length: Term Prerequisite: Audition.
Membership in this highly select choir is made up of
students with previous choral experience. The
scope of music involves Renaissance madrigals to contemporary choral literature.
This choral ensemble will perform in school concerts as well as in the
community and in competition. Students
selected for this group will be understood to place a high priority on musical
excellence and have a firm dedication to the group.
Many out-of-school performances are required and students must provide
some of their own costumes. SHOW CHOIR Credit: l Grade: 10,
11, 12
Course Length: Term Prerequisite:
Audition. Membership in this highly select choir is made up of
students with previous choral experience. The
student will gain first-hand knowledge of how to get a “show” to opening
night. This group will perform in
the community, in school concerts, and in competition.
Students selected for this group will be understood to place a high
priority on musical excellence and have a firm dedication to the group.
Out-of-school performances are required and students must provide some of
their own costumes. VISUAL ART I Credit: l Grade: 9,
10, 11, 12
Course Length: Term This course is an introductory course in art.
It is designed to provide experiences that challenge interested students.
An introduction to the basics of elements and principles of design and
how to apply them within the art experience is a major part of this course.
Art appreciation is included with an emphasis on daily effort and
exposure to the world of art. VISUAL ART II Credit: l Grade: 10,
11, 12
Course Length: Term Prerequisite: Visual
Art I; teacher approval. This course is the second level of art designed
to refine the ability to use design fundamentals in art production.
A variety of media is used. Advanced
processes are explored. A
refinement of skills and techniques is encouraged.
Art appreciation as it relates to significant periods of art and art
forms are included. VISUAL ART III Credit: l Grade: 11,
12
Course Length: Term Prerequisite: Visual
Arts I and II; teacher approval. This course is a third level of art designed for the advanced student to concentrate efforts on a balance of areas of individual interest. Also, to refine design understanding, to refine production of skills and techniques, to conduct research related to performance in those areas of interest and to develop a balanced understanding of culture and history with relation to various art disciplines and processes. STUDIO ART Credit: l Grade: 11, 12 Course Length: Term Prerequisite: Visual
Arts I, II and III; teacher approval. This course will provide in-depth supervised
studio art to students with recognized talent in visual arts. |
