Woodford County High School Summer Reading Program for Advanced English Classes

Purpose

The purpose of the Woodford County High School Summer Reading program is to help prepare students who plan to take the senior Advanced Placement English exam.  This nationally competitive examination recommends a comprehensive list of titles each student should be familiar with in order to write the exam successfully.  Since each book on this extensive list cannot be taught in the regular eight terms, outside reading increases students’ chances to excel.

The student who chooses to enroll in these rigorous advanced classes commits to a willingness to work hard on focused, independent study. This commitment indicates a personal and social responsibility to continue with the workload, individually and as part of a group.

An important component of the yearly curriculum, the Summer Reading program provides students with an opportunity to read accurately, analytically, and critically.

Requirements of the program

Ninth graders are required to read three books.  Two, denoted on the “Reading List”, are required.  Students must choose one additional book from the optional choice list for their grade level.

Tenth graders are required to read four books.  Two, denoted on the “Reading List”, are required.  Students must choose two additional books from the optional choice list for their grade level.

All students must take a ten item objective test on each book they read.  Please see the information sheet for test taking.

Objective Test Taking Information

All students must take a ten item objective test on each book they read.

Tests may be taken a MAXIMUM of twice, with a 24 hour window between testing sessions.  If two tests are taken, only the SECOND will be recorded.

If a student starts a test, he/she must finish that test.

After a student takes a test, he/she may review the test questions but will not be given the correct answers by the test proctor.

Any student who wants to take a Summer Reading book test may take it in the library during regular school hours until school is out. Students who make an average score less than 70 on Summer Reading Testing will be removed from Advanced or AP English
