COLLABORATIVE ENGLISH                                                                                                                                                   Credit:  l

 Collaborative English is a learner-paced course that will focus on the delivery of appropriate educational services to all students within the general education classroom, particularly special education learners.  Special needs learners include students with educational disabilities and students considered to be at-risk in the general education curriculum.  Multiple learning methods will be implemented with an emphasis on real-life applications.  Collaborative English will enhance the special education student’s transition from specialized instruction in the resource setting to a general education curriculum in a regular education setting.  Daily and weekly interactions will occur between the special education teacher and regular education teacher.  This team will modify assignments, materials and provide instruction.  NOTE:  Offering this course is dependent upon availability of staff/due process.

COMMUNITY-BASED INSTRUCTION

 Prerequisite:  IEP/Due Process.

 This course provides learner-pace instruction in community-based skills.  It offers skill development that can increase student performance and independence in community, vocational, and recreational/leisure settings.  This course will include multiple learning methods with an emphasis on real-world application.  This course will be prescribed by the Individual Education Plan of each student enrolled in the class.

 ENGLISH

 Prerequisite:  Due Process.

 This course provides learner-paced instruction in the minimal competency skills as prescribed by the Individual Education Plan of each student including real-world application.  Areas of competency include some or all of the following:  Following directions, filling out forms connected with daily living, reaching and understanding publications for personal information and personal satisfaction, writing skills, listening skills, speaking skills, sequencing skills, study skills, use of dictionaries, encyclopedias, telephone usage, mechanics in writing and fluency, and meaning in reading.  Emphasis will be placed on reading and writing skills in most instances.   This course will include multiple learning methods. 

MATH

 Prerequisite:  Due Process.

 This course provides learner-paced instruction in minimal competency skills as prescribed by the student’s Individualized Educational Plan, including real-world applications.  Concepts may include whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, rounding off numbers, estimating answers, using percents, reading and interpreting graphs, reading and taking measurements, place value, counting money, giving change, using a checking account and using a budget.  This course will include multiple learning methods. 

SCIENCE

 Prerequisite:  Due Process.

 This course is a learner-paced course where students will learn how to use thermometers, weather vanes, and barometers.  The will investigate water, ice, water vapor and thunderstorms, and will examine soil, rocks, fossils and maps.  Students will also study plants and animals and their relationship to humans.  Emphasis will be placed on application of information gained in daily living.  This course will include multiple learning methods with an emphasis on real-world application.

 SOCIAL SKILLS

 This is a learner-paced course where students learn anger control, conflict management, and interpersonal skills through use of specialized curriculum and materials.  Students learn by practicing the skills taught in role-play situations, homework, self-monitoring and reporting.  This course will include multiple learning methods with an emphasis on real-world application.

 This is a learner-paced course that emphasizes the economics of paycheck management, consumerism, and tax forms.  It includes instruction in governmental procedures.  Utilization of community resources, individual responsibility related to the law, freedom, poverty, participation in community affairs, rights of others, and voting.  It also stresses the importance of development of appropriate behaviors, values and interpersonal relationships.  This course will include multiple learning methods with an emphasis on real-world application.

 To compete successfully in today’s education system students need more than basic intelligence. This course is a learner-paced course that will provide thinking, planning, reading, problem solving, time management, organizational, and study skills. Topics addressed in this course are:  goal setting, setting priorities, appreciation cause and effect, becoming organized, managing time, planning ahead, thinking tactically and strategically, and dealing with setbacks.  This course will include multiple learning methods with an emphasis on real-world application.  NOTE:  Offering this course is dependent upon availability of staff.
