Dear Summer Reading Participant,

As a member of our summer Reading Program, you have made a commitment to spend a portion of your summer vacation reading selections that offer their readers insight into the challenges, desires, yearnings, and complexities of man.  And while some titles may be more appealing than others, each work has something of significance for its reader.  Look for that 'greatness' as you read, engaging yourself in the story, its unique setting, and the conflicts of its memorable characters.
As in years past, all library books are housed at the public library in Versailles.  You may, however, elect to purchase personal copies, especially of the required titles.  This will allow the reader to freely mark passages and make notes, which may be of help during the school year.  Used copies can be found quite inexpensively on the internet.  For those students who do check out books, you must follow the library's rules for checkout and return:  overdue? lost? you must pay!  Please take care of the books, keep up with them, and return them on a timely basis.
All testing will be done at the WCHS library on the library computers.  We will follow the same procedure as last year in that several people may test at the same time, with results available immediately upon completion.  Please review
Objective Test Taking Information found on this web site for the testing rules.
For your convenience, this testing information is available on our website.  It is the responsibility of each reader to retrieve this information and fulfill the obligations to stay enrolled in these accelerated courses.  Ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders, pay particular attention to the revised guidelines concerning projects and the written component that must accompany them.  Some old "favorites" no longer exist!  Also of importance is the test score requirement.  Students must score a combined average of 70% or higher on the reading tests to remain in the program.  Those readers who score lower than 70% will be removed from the program in August and put in a regular English class.
Finally, we have tried to schedule times that are convenient for all summer readers, but conflicts and inconveniences are certain to occur.  Testing is available during the day in May and early June; night time testing is provided in June and July for those who have jobs or are involved in summer sports/conditioning, and testing time is available as late as August 6, 2007 for those students who are out of town, on vacation, at camp, or  do mission work most of the summer.  Plan accordingly and pace yourself.
Please allow the Summer Reading Program to be the enriching program it was designed to be; do not settle for reading Spark notes or viewing movies!  These underhanded practices devalue the integrity of the program and those who choose to participate in it.
Have a great summer.  We look forward to seeing each of you at the library!
