SPECIAL VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS CAREER DEVELOPMENT Credit: l Grade: 9,
10, 11, 12
Course Length: Term The career development curriculum includes
vocational assessment, individual remediation in basic skills, understanding of
career opportunities in the world of work, human relations, and life and
employability skills. The course
includes field trips, laboratory and simulated experiences which enhance the
development of self-awareness and attitudes toward the world of work and
strengthen academic preparation. CAREER MAJOR
COOP Grade: 12
Course
Length: 1 or 2 Terms Prerequisite: Co-op
teacher approval. The student must
be enrolled in a career major related class during 1st or 2nd
terms. All students must perform a
major project as approved by the vocational coordinator.
Co-op Lab (Agricultural, Business, Technology II,
Drafting) Anyone completing a
career major in Business, Drafting, Technology II will be able to co-op at a
work site directly related to the career major.
The work site must be approved by the Vocational Coordinator prior to
placement. The student must have
two (2) credits in the career major and be enrolled in the third (3rd)
course before taking co-op lab. COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE I
Credit: 1.5 or 3 Grade: 11,

Course
Length: 1 or 2 Terms Prerequisite: Co-op
teacher approval. Recommended: Career
Development.
Credit:
½ or l The course provides basic job seeking and job keeping
skills. Students are also involved
in the exploration of various career opportunities and the requirements to be
successful in their career choice. The class will also provide various consumer information from
living on one's own, to insurance, to banking, and how to get the most for a
dollar. The course also stresses
basic skills in math, English and reading. COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE II
Credit:
1.5 or 3 Grade: 12
Course
Length: Terms 1 or 2 Prerequisite: Cooperative
Work Experience I; Co-op teacher approval. This class is designed to enhance the learning
experience of those students who have completed Co-op I.
This course is highly selective and very limited.
The Co-op I instructor will make all recommendations for this course. WORK STUDY Credit: 1
or 2 Grade: 10, 11, 12 Course Length: 1 or 2 Terms Prerequisite:
Teacher approval. Students will work in various areas of the school including cafeteria, library, etc. Work Study is offered before, during and after school. STUDY SKILLSVOCATIONAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM Credit: l Grade: 9,

Course Length: Term Prerequisite:
Counselor’s approval and placement required. The course will give students an avenue for self-discovery through the acquisition of social skills, organizational skills, study skills, note taking skills, and occupational skills. The students will also get individual help in the core areas of math, English, social studies and science. This help will come in the form of individual and group tutoring in which the students will be expected to complete the assignments from their core areas. VOCATIONAL SCHOOL PROGRAMS (Selected

Course Length: 2 Terms Prerequisite:
Must be 16 years old prior to September 1. These courses are available at the Eastside and
Southside Centers for Applied Technology. The
purpose is to prepare students for entry jobs in these fields.
They may be taken as part of the pre-college curriculum during the junior
and/or senior years. AGRICULTURE v
Horticulture Students
gain actual experience in greenhouse production and management; landscape and
floral design; gardening; turf management and nursery production. Computers v
Computer
Technology Students learn to diagnosis and service
computers. Students are working
toward A+ certification. v
Computer Networking Students are introduced to networking and network management. Students are working toward NET+ certification. v
Telecommunications Students will be introduced to training and installing, terminating and testing voice, data communication and fiber optic cables. Students are working toward BICSI. CONSTRUCTION v
Carpentry Students
are taught how to build the frame of a house plus other jobs in the construction
field. v
Electricity Students
learn to install electrical wiring systems in new or renovated construction of
homes. v
Heating
and Air Conditioning Future
technicians who install and service heating and cooling systems are prepared
here. v
Interior
Finishing Students
learn to install drywall, flooring, tile, trim, ceilings and other jobs required
in the completion of homes or businesses. v
Masonry Brick
laying in the construction of chimneys, walls, and fireplaces for new homes is
learned here. TRANSPORTATION v
Auto
Collision Repair Students
repair automobiles that have been damaged in accidents. v
Auto
Technology This
course teaches the diagnosis of automobile technical systems and their service
and repair. v
Aviation This
is a starting course for students who may wish to begin a career in aviation
including flying, plus technical support for engines and airframes. v
Truck
and Diesel The purpose of this course is to teach students how to service and repair large trucks and large equipment diesel engines. |
